Coping with Social Anxiety: The Definitive Guide to Effective Treatment Options

Tuesday, 31. August 2010

Product Description
An essential guide for the 5.3 million American sufferers of social anxiety from a leading
psychiatrist and researcher

An estimated 5.3 million Americans experience social anxiety disorder, making it the third most common psychiatric illness in the United States. Unlike people with simple shyness, people with social anxiety disorder become sick with fear in social situations, experiencing physical symptoms like sweating, trembling, a shaky voice, or a pounding heart. They realize their fears are irrational, but they are virtually incapable of maintaining healthy relationships and performing everyday tasks in public settings without medical treatment.

In Coping with Social Anxiety, Eric Hollander, director of the Compulsive, Impulsive, and Anxiety Disorders Program at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center explains
- the nature of social anxiety disorder and how it differs from
simple shyness and phobia
- the latest research on the physiological effects of social anxiety
disorder and its links with depression
- the full range of treatment options-and how to select the best
therapeutic course with the help of a medical professional

Illustrated by accounts of successful treatment from Hollander’s clinical practice, this book will help readers make informed judgments about the proper treatment to seek for themselves or someone close to them.

Bipolar Depression: A Comprehensive Guide

Sunday, 15. August 2010

Product Description
Although depression is the most common presentation of bipolar disorder, correct diagnosis generally requires a history of mania and thus presents a formidable challenge. This book provides clinicians with the necessary guidance to distinguish this illness and pursue an appropriate therapeutic course. It brings together a team of clinical investigators who offer cutting-edge research on the topic and address the most critical concerns regarding its treatment.

Bipolar Depression first introduces a hierarchical model for diagnosis to allow the clinician to distinguish between bipolar and unipolar depression, addressing problems of misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis as well as differentiating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder. Early chapters review the neurobiology and genetics of this highly heritable condition, presenting studies of neurotransmitter function and brain imaging studies and documenting the susceptibility of specific chromosomes as loci for bipolar disorder. Other chapters address the particular issues of bipolar depression in children, for whom a diagnosis is especially problematic, and suicide, focusing on the need for assessment during both acute and maintenance treatment with interventions appropriate to a patient’s symptoms and history. Bipolar Depression offers critiques of specific treatment approaches:

  • Lithium and antiepileptic drugs: featuring a review of the most recent research on the use of lithium, in which higher doses are shown to be effective, plus coverage of lamotrigine, valproic acid, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, and topiramate.
  • Antidepressants: offering new perspectives on a complex field, including a discussion of the randomized clinical trial literature and observational studies on their use, and citing cautions regarding side effects.
  • Antipsychotics: evaluating the difference between first- and second-generation medications and discussing their role in controlling acute depressions.
  • Novel approaches to treatment: including the use of atypical neuroleptics, electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, ketogenic diet, omega-3 fatty acids, myo-inositol, and dopamine agonists.
  • Psychological interventions: focusing on the inclusion of cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal social rhythm therapy for nonmelancholic depressions in patients who had previously received psychoeducation.

Despite the past decade’s advances in practice and research, there remains much room for progress in understanding and treating bipolar depression. This book blazes a trail toward that goal, opening new doors in recognizing differences between bipolar and unipolar forms of depression while offering both researchers and clinicians key insights into this troubling illness.

Rebuild from Depression: A Nutrient Guide Including Depression in Pregnancy and Postpartum

Sunday, 8. August 2010

Product Description
In Rebuild from Depression: A Nutrient Guide, Including Depression in Pregnancy and Postpartum, Amanda Rose, Ph.D. and Annell Adams, M.D. identify the seven nutrients most commonly associated with depression in the medical literature, including Omega 3, B vitamins, vitamin D, iron, magnesium, and zinc. They provide readers with tools to: (1) Identify a nutrient deficiency, (2) Locate the best supplements, and (3) Select and prepare foods to maximize those nutrients in their diet.

The book opens with Rose’s biography of depression and psychosis. She makes a compelling claim: My grandmother died at the age of sixty-one from complications of postpartum depression. Rose argues that her grandmother showed signs of nutrient deficiencies in her 20s, did not correct them, and suffered a life of depression, diabetes, and heart disease, all of which share a common nutrient deficiency: Omega 3 fatty acids.

The book describes the research basis for the nutrient-depression link, highlighting the nutrients with the strongest basis in research. With seven specific nutrients in mind, the authors review each of the food groups, recommending how to improve one’s diet for the long-term. Which meats are highest in Omega 3 fatty acids? How do you select oils to improve your Omega 3 status? Should you trim your steak?

In a unique contribution to work on depression, the authors present “depression buster foods”: those foods highest in the seven focus nutrients. The Rebuild book is the only book of its kind to identify criteria for depression-fighting foods and apply those criteria systematically to the USDA’s database of over 5,000 foods.
